RECAP
|
Matti Suokko opened his presentation by giving a brief overview of Microsoft Corporation globally, and their activities in Finland and Japan, and the Japanese computer market, which, especially in the mobile PC's is heavily dominated by the domestic manufacturers.

The Windows Mobile PC mission is to make them more personal and more mobile and to compress the natural evolution by two years, i.e. what was expected in 2010 should happen already in 2008.

The Microsoft Mobility Platforms cover a wide range, from smart personal objects (like watches) to smartphones, combined pocket PC's/phones, notebook PC's and tablet PC's. In Mr. Suokko's opinion, development will probably focus on the first and the last categories. And the tablet PC would to a large extent replace the traditional desktop PC, giving more mobility and versatile input methods, including pen, ink and speech.

Heikki Tenhunen of Nokia Japan was asked to comment on Mr. Suokko's views from a mobile phone manufacturers perspective. Although Nokia and Microsoft have different views, and compete on the platforms, Mr. Tenhunen largely agreed on the scenarios Mr. Suokko presented.
